Question What is this noise!?

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ti0afzwwm2...71717.mp4?dl=0

Hopefully the link works, this noise is concerning to me and sounds expensive! The noise begins with a RATTLE on start up, then it dies down, after going up a hill or getting on the interstate it gets pretty bad and sounds pretty clunky and diesel like, it usually stays this way until I kill the engine too. I just got an oil change and it still appears to be happening. I'm thinking some kind of component with the timing? I changed the spark plugs and ignition coils about a year ago too I don't think they would be out...the truck is a 2003 F150 XLT 5.4 V8 Triton. Any Ideas? I am on the verge of taking it in to get looked at but wanted to check this forum out as I am new.

Thanks!

This sounds like it could be the timing chain slapping around due to worn/ damaged timing chain guides.

Hard to hear... your video would be better taken under the hood at the front of the motor. All I can hear sounds like an exhaust tick.

Has anyone done a timing job? is it pretty straight forward? I have a back up car so I can take my time with the repair ... I don't see much else going wrong with my truck I feel I'd be pretty good after this repair...thoughts? should I just bite the bullet and take it in.

I thought that the "Triton diesel noise" was the phasers...

I get messed up on the three valve two valve thing often but here's some Makuloco.

You can do it yourself
if you got tools, space, intelligence and are organized
Theres workarounds for special tools, just watch youtube video. Fords timing chain is relatively idiot proof.

Other costly things that could happen....a/c, tranny, head gasket.....what makes sense to spend depends on overall condition of vehicle.

Nothings free to drive, Things wear out and require maintenance if driven. If you drive 20k miles per year and get by for 1000-2000 per yr time average on old high mileage vehicle ...youve done good. It can come in waves $5000 for engine....no trouble for 4 yrs. Then 2500 for tranny...no trouble 2 yrs, then AC, brakes, Etc....no trouble 3 yrs....then start over....

Should be a lot less than a new vehicle cost, But it not going to be free

The only tool that I think is absolutely necessary for this job is the crank tool (link below). It makes lining everything up much easier. ALSO, don't go chincy on the chain set. Get a good one like a Cloyes or Melling set.

You can turn the crank with the same crank tool as a SBC, or I've seen guys turn them with a large socket.

EDIT: My socket that I use:

Timing component failures are relatively uncommon on the 2V engines. More of a 3V problem.
they can be a pain but on the 2V's it's not as difficult as say a 3V

Thank you all so much! I think I can tackle it myself. I have a 2v I love FordTechMakuloco! Does anyone have any resources on where I can find literature on how to do the repair? I noticed even in the video he uses a print out of some kind, I'm a book worm and those would be of high value to me! Thanks again to everyone that has contributed!!
