What to do?
I have an '01 4.6. It's got a 3" lift on 35s. I have a few questions. First of all, the truck is grossly underpowered. I realize it's lifted, but still. I was wondering if I should either...
1) Swap in a 5.4
or
2) Put in a 4.56 front/rear end
Im 17 so my options are very limited from a financial standpoint.
I also haul stuff for work and ride bikes and atvs so my current situation isn't really working out for me. Is the 5.4 even worth it? HP increase isn't that great but the extra torque seems good. And if I should swap a 5.4, should I go with the 2v standard f150 5.4 or a 4v out of a navigator. Thanks

It would be worth it to me. IDK about for you.
Start with gears. Go from there.

I would do the gears to save your trans as carcrazy said. If you can't afford both then you can't afford a trans on top lol.
From what I understand when you re-gear you will have all the power you will need (unless you want to some professional racing).
I have a 5" lift on 35's with the stock 3.55 gears, there is not a lot of power but it is enough. These are trucks, they don't need to go 100 mph. For me the power is fine even with putting 1800 lbs of dirt in the bed. I eventually would like to re-gear to save my trans but my torque converter is already pretty bad so I will wait until I need a new trans and do it all at once.

thought stock trans could easily handle torque put out by 5.4. Was under the impression the swap only required a motor, not a trans. Heard all you needed was a custom tune to get the stock trans to work with the 5.4 swap. I may be wrong, but i don't remember anyone on the forum who did the swap say anything about changing the trans too.

The bigger tires on stock gears is what is hard on the trans, not just what size your engine is. I believe the 5.4's came with the 4r70's too, some like the lightning I believe had the 4r100.
Your engine can make all the power in the world, but your gears are pretty much where you feel the power. with the right gears your truck will drive like it did before you got bigger tires (at least that is what I hear). Also, don't over gear, your gears are like the 3 bears, 3.55/3.73's are just a little to small, 4.88's are too big, and 4.56's and 4.10 are just right for 35's.

You have to swap the torque converter and get a tune to make the tranny work after a 5.4 swap. Do you have a 4.6 or 4.2? If you have a 4.6 just get the gears and be done with it
