Default Welding to Bumper

This may be a stupid question, but could I weld a D-ring mount to my bumper? Does it need to be a certain material? And would it be pretty sturdy? Thanks

Yes you can. no it wont be sturdy The bumper is pretty much for looks. if you tie it into the part that is set up for a trailer ball it might hold a light load but if your going to use it as a recovery point I wouldnt trust it at all.

Ok, I figured that they wouldnt be much support if I wanted to actually use them, but I have my big hook in my 2" reciever for that . If I do it they are just giong to be for looks mainly.

If I do that then Im just going to have to make a plate and weld it to that to bolt to the bumper. Id rather just weld it and save a step and some money

why not just have them welded to the frame underneath. that bumper isnt meant to withstand alot of force from pulling.

If it's for looks, why not drill 2 holes and do it that way? No need for welding if it's to look "cool"... But welding it, it would not hold up..

If its legitimately for towing and not just to 'look good' I'd have it welded to the frame underneath.

Plus you wouldn't really want to weld onto the chrome bumper as it would pretty well ruin the finish at the welds which wouldn't 'look good' (assuming you have the stock chrome bumper). You'd basically have to grind/sand the chrome off where the weld would be to have a good weld which would require you to re-plate the chrome on your bumper after you finish.

Well what I plan on doing was grinding off the chrome where I needed to weld and plan on painting my bumpers black anyway. So messing up the chrome wouldnt matter. Not sure if Im going to do it since I would have to weld it to the bumper for support. Just playing with ideas.
