Thumbs down Welded differential/Plugged

The other day I was driving down the road when I heard a loud clank so I pulled over to check out what it was, I got out of the truck and went to the rear and realized I had a hole through my differential cover and was leaking fluid out of the rear.

I had my friend pick it up with his trailer and bring it to my house so the next morning I could open the diff. and see what happened. Upon opening it:

The gears were fine but there was two big screws that came out of the ring gear and I guess backed themselfs out somehow and the gears threw them against the diff cover causing it to bust a hole and then fell to the bottom of the diff.

So I took it to a mechanic to have it looked at and they fixed the problem but when they went to re-fill the differential they said they couldnt get he fill plug out...so they welded the hole in the rear and drilled another hole and plugged it up when they got done filling it.

My question is, since the rear differential now looks like **** would I be able to buy a new differential cover and then fill the diff up using the ABS sensor hole? I'm stuck on what to do but I know I need a new cover because it looks like garbage right now.

MagHytec (spelling?) sells a diff cover that has a fill and drain plug in it. They are pricey but they hold extra fluid and provide extra cooling for the diff. Worth a look anyways.

I've been trying to sell the truck for the past month and I'm not trying to dump alot of money into it so I was looking more towards a cheaper 35-40 dollar one on Jeggs.

Im pretty sure you can't fill it from the ABS sensor. You couldn't just get a new diff cover from the junkyard or somethin?

I could probably get a used one from the junkyard but that doesn't solve my problem on how to re-fill it, getting a new cover isnt the problem, trying to find a way to re-fill it without drilling another hole in a new cover is the problem. I'm getting mixed words here, some people are saying you can fill it through the sensor and others are saying the complete opposite..

You can use the hole for the vent tube. And actually I think you can use the ABS sensor

There's no reson you can't fill it thru vent hole or even sensor hole but you won't be able to get the level accurate.

X3 same thing I was gonna say. It will sand down smooth then just tape off around everything and spray paint it. I wouldn't even take the cover off to do it.
