So my trucks now sitting at 172k my tranny got rebuilt in April at 167k. Just yesterday I go to drive to work and start it up let it warm up like always, put it in drive and its in neutral wouldn't move. I had to give it some gas up to about 1200rpm then it popped into first.

After that the truck drove and shifted just fine no slipping at all, then I noticed when coming to a stop instead of downshifting into 1st its back in neutral and have to do the same thing, give it a little gas and I'm off again, but it only does this every few stops. Other times it downshifts just fine.

I checked the fluid and its full and red but smelled a little burnt, so I'm thinking I'm gonna drop the pan and change the fluid and filter.

Does this sound like a fluid issue? The trannys basically brand new and shouldn't be causing trouble already.

As long as the level is fine in park while running, I doubt its a fluid issue. UNLESS the wrong fluid was used after the rebuild. I'm not sure what damages could occur from using the wrong fluid, but I'd rather not find out. I'm also concerned about the burnt smell. Under normal circumstances, the fluid should never smell burnt. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the tranny rebuilt?
