Default Unusual trans problem...

I have a 97 auto 4wd w/4.6

I haven’t had it long but it did drive and shift through all the gears like it should,
So driving down a dirt road slow and out of overdrive, I hit the overdrive off an the trans made grinding noises an just acted like it was in neutral...

after I stopped it has nothing, no park or anything, it drove fine an went threw all the gears like normal prior...

I’ve checked the fluid an it’s full an unburnt, I’m lost on what to do or try next. Help is very appreciated, thanks.

Your description kind of doesn't make sense. You said that you were "out of overdrive", but then "hit the overdrive off". Why would turn off overdrive if it was already off? How slow is "slow"? Sorry to get all English teacher on you, but words is all there is.

Maybe add a few more details for clarity.

No problem, I know I don’t explain things the best.
I was going slow enough that it was in 3rd gear when I pushed the button for OD off. I wanted to turn it off because it kept flip flopping between 3rd and 4th

The steering bushing an column was bad, the clockspring thing for the wires was broke also, a mechanic told me it most likely shorted something out an to change the column out; which I have, but I don’t know about automatics

I don’t know a lot about these automatics, but if something did short out where I do start?

I hooked the battery back up an it will go threw the first 3 gears very fast, it doesn’t go into overdrive an does not show any codes other than the O2 senors for bank 1 & 2, it doesn’t have cats... also the speedometer an tach still work.

Does the EPC solenoid have any effect on this?

It sounds like the 4R70W solenoid pack is messing up on your truck. It isn't an uncommon problem.

Ah okay, A quick search on google tells me that would include the TCC, EPC, and a shift solenoid...

Put the new solenoid pack in the trans, it’s better but still feels like it doesn’t have overdrive...
the old fluid didn’t smell burnt but was dark colored.
The pan didn’t have shavings or anything either.

is the trans gone?
