Default Truck rebuilding opinions

Let me start this off by saying that you all for taking the time to help me out. I'm fairly new to this site and currently own a 99 XLT 5.4 4X4 that's been slightly modified. The reason I got one was because my dad bought a 97 lariat 5.4 in 98 that had 22k on it that truck is still in our driveway with almost 340k miles on it I have loved that truck since day one. Now to the question portion. This truck has so much sentimental value to me and my family that I wanna but it from my dad(he said I could have it for 500 bucks). I want to restore at least the drivetrain to its former glory. Do you guys think it would be best to try and find a used/rebuilt engine and then have the tranny rebuilt or should I try and dig into that 5.4 beast myself? I have experience with rebuilds just never a mod motor. I have no doubt on actually being able to do it just wondering on cost comparison and the fact that I would like to be able to still say original drivetrain(with a little help) haha!

I just got a jasper remanufactured ford motor dropped in my truck for 4k installed and a trans rebuild would probably be about 1k so 5 and you should be good to go

Perfect honestly no problems whatsoever out of it and my mechanic recommended it to me. It's got a 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and I drive it hard

Yeah I work there part time. What all comes on the jasper motors? I figured it would just be a long block as well

You're off on the trans rebuild. I just got my M5OD Rebuilt for $2,376 and that was using, used, but still good, parts. All new parts would have been $3,780. From what I understand, automatics are even more expensive.
