Default Transmission Talk

Ok guys, as some of you may know, I have an engine build project (that's currently kinda lagging behind) that I plan to put into my 02 Supercrew. The truck is a 2wd and I plan to make it into a custom desert truck with long travel suspension all around (more on full plans when I start on that project).

The goal is for the engine to produce 800hp on a "daily" or street tune and to produce 1000hp on a less conservative "race" or "fun" tune. I'll put a link in this paragraph to the build thread once the project resumes.

Obviously a stock transmission isn't going to hold up to these numbers. The two (well three) options from the factory for autos were the 4r70w and the 4r100. The e4od was offered as well I believe but is basically the same as a 4r100.

My question is, what are my options as far as transmissions go. I am not opposed to a manual swap. A t56 viper spec looks tempting. I'm not necessarily looking for ease of swap. I'm looking for the most reliable at this power level. I've heard that the 4r70w and 4r100 might not even be able to handle these power levels without even if they are built as strong as possible.

I would prefer to have at least 4 gears as I plan to drive on the street off and on and would like to be able to keep rpm's at a decent level when driving in the city. I would however consider a th400 if yall think its a good option.

Post your thoughts below and thanks in advance!

1000hp? I haven't seen your build thread but I assume youre looking at $20-50k? Out of a 5.4? Lightning roddder guys will know more than the plebs on here. 4r100 is a newer model of e40d.. Even a built 4r100might not last long at 1k HP.

What engine you planning on using? That can make a difference in choices.
You will be looking at superduty type transmissions though for that kind of daily power.

Semi built 5r110 from a v10 or 3v 5.4 use a baumann TCS to control it. The 5R110 with a gas engine is identical to the diesel counterpart but with a better first gear. Get a good converter and better input shafts and 1st gear Sun gear and drum. I have seen stock 5r110'so take a beating behind heavily tuned 6.4's. Especially being 2wd, building a cross member will be easy.

The engine will be a turbo (possibly twin, haven't gotten that far yet) aluminum block 2v 4.6l with trick flow heads and intake for the mustang while I'm n/a. It'll have a forged crank stroked to 4.75L rated for 1200hp, along with forged rods and pistons to support up to 1200hp as well. I'm over building it a bit to give me a small cushion. It's going to be n/a for a while to get it broken in and seasoned a bit. Might have a custom manifold built when I boost it but that's later down the road.

For now it'll be a forged, cammed n/a motor with heads and intake manifold and headers. I want to get the transmission sorted out at the same time as initial install and get it driving with the new trans until the serious power comes into play. That way only the tune and other minor things have to be tweaked.

The forged long block will run me about 9k, intake manifold about 900. I also plan to replace ac compressor and power steering pump other accessories so for the engine installed ready to go I'm looking at less than 12k. But add trans, drive shaft, rear end and boost and the numbers go up significantly lol.

Doesn't seem practical to most but if you knew my true passion for vehicles in general and especially performance vehicles. And add in my love for this generation...I figured it'd be a fun toy project that I could have some fun memories in and with.

Just doing some basic math here and your plan's don't add up to 1,000 hp unless I'm missing something...

Only way to hit those kind of numbers is to bore and stroke the 4.6 out to a 5.0 by combining an increase in stroke length from 3.54 inches to 3.75 inches with a 0.020 overbore. You would then need to run north of 10:1 compression on boost to even get close and frankly that's a tricky combination to manage without breaking things....expensive things.

On the topic of boost, if you wan't to go with a single turbo it would need to be freakin massive....like turbo sand drag's in the Middle East huge...twins would be much more manageable from a placement and a cost standpoint IMO.

I'm not saying you cant do it, anything is possible but you won't crack 4 digits on a 4.75. And you will wave bye bye to $12k on your way towards $20 -$25k very easily if 1,000hp is the target.

ibd2328. I believe he used a slightly modified 4r100, but I believe he is having issues with it.

With 1,000 hp, you do not want a manual trans. I know Art Carr builds an AOD/AODE/4R70W that is supposed to withstand around 800hp. I'd call them and see what they have. But I am inclined to agree with Tcrote above, and I don't think your combo adds up to 1,000 hp without more $$$$$.
