Default Transmission Life???

I have a 2002 f-150 5.4L. I was curious as to how long the average tranny life is for these trucks. I know it all depends on how you drive, what you tow, etc. But just an average. How many miles have your tranny's gone for?

Thank You,

Not sure if it much matter, because I have the 4.6, but when I bought mine the original owners gave me the receipts and everything for when they had the tranny replaced at around 40,000 miles, and I've now got 122,000 + on the truck.

You keep the fluid from getting too hot, change it every 15-20k miles as well as the filter and the transmission will last you forever.

Ya recently I put a dropped the pan and put a TCI filter in it, and added a cooler from my dad's 7.3L Diesel. So the fluid runs tghrough my cooler, and than through the bigger cooler, and than back the trans., and than added a trans. temp. gauge. I pull pretty much all summer is the reason for all that. I was just wondering becasue last night I was feeling some shuttering in overdrive when I lightly pushed the gas coming home. It was not a one time deal. Did it over and over, but only in overdrive at about 50mph. ???

Thank you

That sounds like a COP or "Coil On Plug" When one goes bad it will cause those same exact symptoms, similar to stuttering under load. One way to find out which coil it is, is to let it continue to do that the next time it does it, don't push the gas harder until it stops, just let it run like that for a while, eventually your check engine light will come on and when you check the codes it will give you a cylinder # ___ misfire, and thats the COP to replace.

I went through the same thing about three weeks after I bought my truck, I thought the transmission was going bad, until the check engine light came on.

My 2002 fx4 5.4 has 118k and counting on it and whenever I make it downshift from overdrive it is really hard and occasionally when it is shifting into overdrive I think that it is the torque converter. Anyone else have a similar problem?

Ya but a Coil or Plug issue would cause the RPM's to jump around when it happened, and they did not move at all. I checked that everytime it happened becuase misfire was my first thought. I will do some investigation this weekend and see what I can come up with. If it is the tranny it just means when it actually goes out for good, I get to build it up beefy and strong for towing, and I don't mind doing automatic transmission builds. HAHA. Have to look at the good side of everything.

Thank You, Anymore input is great and appreciated
