Default Transfer case oil?

Been wanting to change the transfer case fluid on my 01 f-150. The manual says to use straight mercon atf which motorcraft doesn't make anymore. Ford came out with xl-12 transfer case oil awhile ago
specifically for use in transfer cases but now have discontinued. The current oil ive been seeing recommended is mercon lv supposedly exceeded the xl12.. But when you read the bottle says not for use in
transfer cases. Anyone know the correct motorcraft oil for my transfer case??

They make the XL-12 for MC, so you're just paying for a name if you buy MC instead.

Also.... for your info.... MC has for several years now (until the last couple months) recommended that you DO NOT use LV in your t-case. I don't know why they recently changed that, but until I hear of some real world experiences, I am sticking to their original recommendation of an XL-12 equivalent.

Ya best to stick with the original xl12. Noticed that the vavoline
recommends to use where mercon was called for in transfer cases as my 01.

The only thing that I can think of is, they are using the new Valvoline MaxLife ATF, which is a universal fluid. I use it in all of my transmissions, and I am really impressed with it. It did not, until recently, say it was compatible with LV specifically, however. I called them before that was on the bottle, and they told me it was safe to use. I have since that phone call used it in LV applications twice (both are Ford 6F's), and it has worked well. The MaxLife it also listed as compatible with the older Dex/Merc specs.

So far I have used it in three 4R70W's, two 6F's, and my Toyota U340E, which calls for Toyota WS.

I have no basis, just my own theory because it a plausible.

Might just switch over to vavoline for all ha. I have the same 4r70w in my 01. Was thinking about
trying that maxlife atf in my tranny. Good to hear you've had good results with it. Did you drain all
Your tranny or just partially? Wonder if it would be ok to mix the maxlife with MC atf?

Valvoline makes Ford/Motorcraft synthetic oil weights also.
