It will break things.

There was even a TSB out years ago about this.

Use the Valvoline referenced above only in the transfer case.

Also, if you only drove a few miles then the dipstick may not show low, it will be higher once the trans is up to full operating temp.
Add trans fluid only a little at a time.

They have this at Advance near me. I don't know where you are to check.

sounds good. I’m not even going to add transmission fluid until I’m sure it’s low. This is it after driving 3 miles and operating temp at 195

Here is chart of the recommendations from Ford. LV would not be good for your truck.

It's crazy white, 4 dealers near me kept telling me LV is the new formulation, it will be ok.

After that comment, I asked each of them, what trucks should use mercon V in transfer case if LV wasnt available, each one said all of them.

They dont know jack...

LV flat out smells different. It is also a much darker red. My Escape with the 6F35 takes it.

EDIT: I also believe I have seen a video where FTM suggests using LV, and I disagree with that. My Buddy that owns the transmission shop will not use LV in any of the 4R70/75/AOD family.

Ford actually originally said LV was not to be used in transfer cases, then changed that stance earlier this year. I really don't give a $4it what they've changed, I'm not putting LV in my transfer case. I'll either use XL-12/Valvoline, or Mercon III. I actually just ordered some Mercon III for my Mustang via Amazon.

Like I said above.... I'm sticking with their original recommendation. But you can see below why it is so damn confusing. I thought they'd fixed their confusion by making a bottle that actually said "Transfer Case Fluid" on it, but it appears they've possibly pulled that off the market. Rock Auto

ALSO..... for any of you worried about being able to find this in the future, Rock Auto has XL-12 for $4.18 a bottle right now.

darn, I would have bought that if I wasn’t planning on doing this tomorrow morning but I need to see what’s going on in there.

Yea, the few bottles of xl-12 I bought said transfer case fluid and xl-12 was on the back information panel. They were old, the paper on the bottle was starting to change color, but were sealed containers. This dealer was an hour away from me in gallipolis ohio, but i was traveling for work, so i stopped and grabbed them.

They said they had plenty and no one uses it, lol. I got them for cheap, should grab more.

Joe, a tip - make sure you take off the cross support just behind the transfer case. If you warm the truck and then drain, the old fluid will come out all over that bar and make a huge mess.

Sounds good.

It should make it easier getting the full plug out anyway. I half heartedly attempted with a long extension and could tell it is pretty seized
