Transfer case help!!
I have a 1997 f150 4.6 4wd with esof. A few weeks ago when I tried to use the 4wd it would not work. I would turn the switch and absolutely nothing would happen. I checked fuses and the switch, all that was fine. I got a deal on a transfer case shift motor so I went ahead and gave that a try. When I removed the shift motor I noticed the inticator dial on case showed it was in 4H. The wheels were not actually engaged in 4wd though. I switched the dial to 2wd and installed the new shift motor, but 4wd still didn't work.
Now today while driving a constant humming like noise was coming from somewhere in the transfer case/ transmission area. More concerning was that a couple times when I reached speeds of 40 mph I heard and felt a loud bang. I didn't have far to go so I limped it home. Once home I removed the shift motor just on a hunch and the indicator was in 4H again. This time I am unable to manually turn it to 2wd though. And the truck is not actually in 4wd.
Any thoughts on why I cant manually turn transfer case to 2wd? Am I screwed? I was planning on selling the truck in the near future, I put brand new tires and suspension on it recently. It has 100,000 miles on it. Obviously I can't sell it like this. I hope any repairs wouldn't 'total' it though.
Thanks in advance for any advice anyone could offer.
