I'm doing mine right now. You have to take the cross member off that is holding the tranny. There are 6 bolts 2 on top 2 on bottom and 2 on each side. Take the starter off. There is probly more to yours since it is 4x4. And of course the driveshafts

RTFM. If you don't have one a Chilton or Hayes would suffice. ebay has copies of the factory manuals pretty cheap too. Just so you know the t-case should come off. While it can be done with the t-case still attached it is a lot of work. You will need to remove the exhaust and it is a lot easier to just remove the 6 13mm bolts holding the t-case to the transmission. Don't forget to remove the upper and lower shifter.

While the torsion bars do not come off the cross member does. Go and invest in a shop manual. The complete procedure is in it. 29 steps are involved.

Me and my dad just finished doing this same thing on my truck (4.6l, 98, 4x4). Remove both drive shafts and unbolt the transfer case from the transmission. Take out the cross-member that supports your transmission, its a good idea to put a jack under your tranny before this, we just left the transfer case and it just held itself in place. We didn't do this till we were putting the transmission back in but it would be a good idea to also cut the cross pipe in the exhaust it'll give you plenty more room. Then just go ahead and unbolt your starter and trans from your engine. A good jack is really helpful for this project my truck sits on 33' and we also raised it a couple extra inches but even then it can be a fight for space. Also remember to disconnect your 4wheel and shifter it took us about 3 weeks from start to finish but that was with the wait time of waiting for the parts, and we only were able to ever work on it on my off days from hockey. Getting the whole set up out wasn't horrible it was putting it back in!

Old trick: Use threaded rod in two of the bolt holes to act as a guide so the bell housing lines up with the engine block. Don't forget to replace the rods with the bolts.
