Default Tranny Q's

OK, so my searches on this site and in google have been less than helpful.

What is the 5-speed tranny that is in the '01 4x4's (4.2L)? Once that is established, is the slave mounted on the outside of this tranny?

Know I have a leak somewhere, but have not been able to locate it.

Your 4.2 has a Mazda built M5OD-R2 transmission. The slave is internal and most likely the cause of the leak. There is a black rubber cover on the driver side of the bellhousing near the bottom. Pull off that cover and look for traces of oil. The picture below shows where the cover would be. It is missing in this picture.

While you have the tranny off it would be a good time to check the clutch. While you have the slave off grasp the transmission input shaft and try to move it like a Joy Stick. It shouldn't. After a while mind does and I have to re-shim the input shaft. Too much torque......

if thinking about off-loading truck soon, is the replacement of the clutch necessary when changing slave/master? Assume my slave is blown as all the brake fluid I put in the res is now all over the ground.

Rarely does the clutch disk, pressure plate or flywheel get coated with oil.
