Default trailer hitch electrical connector

Anyone know what all the wires are for that would hook up to trailers? There's like six different colors and when I looked at it, two of mine were cut and it seems as if the previous owner put something else back there.

The trailer lights will turn on when you turn on the truck. Or they should, if everything is wired correctly and working properly. Turn signals, brake lights, etc. will only light up when you perform the same action in your truck.

At least, that's the way I have always observed it. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

ok cool. i was thinkin about tapping into the 12v wire and running some LED's out back. i guess the previous owner already cut into it so i may have to re run wire to the connector as well. sounds like a fun little project. anyone got any ideas on what to run back there other than a tailgate bar let me know.

If your pulling a trailer with trailer breaks you will need a break box, you can get the box and wiring harness for $50 at tractor supply (or similar store) and the harness will just plug into the truck under the steering Colloum.
