Default Towing a Caravan

Hi, I have a 2001 F150, XLT Supercrew. It has a tow hitch in the bumper, how do I know what weight I can tow? I want to tow a touring caravan up to maybe 2000kgs.

On North American Fords it is etched into the bumper. If you can't find the etching on the bumper, check your manual. If the manual is missing any dealer will have the information. I don't think it is strong enough though, but I may be wrong. You may have to get a frame mounted receiver which would certainly be wiser and safer.

The etching will be close to the hitch point and on top of the bumper. Hope this helps!

Hello from Red Deer, Canada!

Nice truck, by the way...

Thanks, I'll have a look at what it says. I think I need something around the 4000lb mark in US/Canadian.

from the Manual....
Using a step bumper (if equipped)
The rear bumper is equipped with an integral hitch and only requires a
ball with a 25.4 mm (one inch) shank diameter. The bumper has a 2 270
kg (5 000 lb.) trailer weight and 227 kg (500 lb.) tongue weight capacity.
If it is necessary to relocate the trailer hitch ball position, a
frame-mounted trailer hitch must be installed.

Is this what I have? If so, that's enough weight for my needs?

Trailers without electric brakes like light boat trailers and such. The four pin is strictly trailer lighting. I believe it may be pre wired for the bigger connectors.

I found this: http://www.etrailer.com/Custom-Fit-V...dy/118242.html

which seems to suggest there is more wiring already there than just the 4 pins, but not sure how this would translate to our UK 7 pin plugs

I am not familiar with how your 7 pin works, but I must say it looks identical to ours so I would assume it works the same. Now most North American trucks are wired for the additional connection already, and many retailers here in Canada have these kits available with instructions as to where the connection is made, usually with no splicing required. I would go to a shop that specializes in trailering equipment and see what they have. I am certain they should sell the components you require. They are usually fairly cheap as well.

This is an example of one of those kits
