Default tire upgrade

First time here & had a question. 2000 ext cab 4x4 with 16x6.5 wheels. can I go up to a 285/75 (have 265/75 now) safely on the stock rim. not concerned with speedo accuracy, just safety and tire failure. I have talked to tire guys and they just look confused and say stick with stock (255/70). Thanks

From what i have read from some searches, you will be ok with 285. I am going with them on my truck which is an 01 4x4 off road..

Had to go back to a previous post by user Bosalinee for this link to help compare tire sizes:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

On newer trucks (not sure when it started), I believe the speedo can be recalibrated through the computer using a programmer. On older trucks, looking at a speedo gear changeout, or in my lazy way - slap a sticker on the speedo reminding how far off it is as measured by the Kentucky State Police. :-)~
