Hey guys, I am new to the forum and am about to buy an 01 F-150 Flareside off road 4x4 lariot with the 5.4. It has 50k on it right now and am wondering if these were good reliable trucks. i have never owned a truck before and want to use it to transport a quad around and maybe eventually tow a SMALL boat.. (4000 pounds max) I will also take it minor off roading to get the the good quad trails. Let me know if you guys think this would be a good truck to get. I guess what i am asking is what major probs have you had with your truck.. Thank for any help that you give..

Will

Also does anyone know the difference between the FX4 and the off-Road edition?

Now that I think about it I guess it would because the tires fit between the wheel wells, so a flarside wont make a difference, but there wont be room for extra gear.

I gto my truck with 80k on it, and it has 98k on it right now, I have done just routine maintance, like trans flush, radiator flush, rear u-joint, and front brakes, and oil changes, lol

I love my truck, but being a 98 and up north, there is some bodywork that I am looking at doing. there is some rust on the bottom of the rockers, and a few bubbles by the bottom of the doors on the rockers.

It seems the 5.4 has an issue with spark plug changes - guess the general theme is to do them more often than the service schedule recommends.

Was the FX4 available as a package in 2001 - or was that package marketed as the 'off-road' edition then?

As for the four-wheeler not fitting - I figure where there's a Will, there's a way to tow-strap that bugger in the bed. Just have to watch the tailgate for road debris getting kicked up and defacing the paint.

the plugs are not as much of a issue on the 2 valve trucks as they are on the new 3 valves, they are just hard to get to on the 97-03 trucks.

I think fx4 is the same thing as off road, just different years.
