I do it all the time, usually it doesn't matter, I just didn't want to add to the confusion he's already got about tires. They really are somewhat complicated until you learn what all the different numbers mean and spend a lot of time dealing with them.

Glad I found this thread was confused myself trying to upgrade tires from my 265/70/17 and didn't know if a 285/70/17 was a taller tire but your explanation made so much sense and now I know what it all means.

Me too.
Here is what I do to cheat.

Go to tirerack.com.
Click on products,...tires,....shop by size.
Enter say 285/70/17.....,proceed to results.
Click on the "specs" below the tire you like.

A Goodyear Wrangler in 285/70/17 size is 32.4" tall and 10.9" wide.

Same tire in a 265/70/17 is 31.7" tall and 10.7" wide.

Different tires will also vary within the same size. Check the specs for the exact tire you want.

They are about 31.8" tall, and about 10.6" wide. Depending on what brand of tire you have. But that's pretty close.

So if I go with a 285/75/17 then my tires would be over 33 inch?

In a Nitto Terra Grappler, it would be 33.86" tall and 11.3" wide.

It's also kind of an odd ball size. The Nitto's were the only ones I found in that size.

Skizriz, I do the same thing. I figured that out a couple months ago. I just put 285/70/17s, basically 33s, on my 97 with a 3 inch body lift and they didn't take up as much space as I thought they would. I could have fit 35s easy. I'm still glad I got the 33s though because on the stock 3.55s I don't want to go bigger.
