If you have a 2WD, it's pretty easy to drop the pan and do the pump. Never done it on a 4X4 yet, but I know you will at least have to drop the front diff - which isn't hard.

The reason being, you have two bolts (or maybe these are only one) that holds the pickup tube to the pump, and there is also a gasket between the two.

As far as you asking about the procedure, this video by Makuloco is better than I can explain. I would invest in the crank tool in the Amazon link below. There are cam tools too, but I have never needed one. And REMEMBER THIS - the tensioners are marked L and R for Left and Right. The drivers side is Left. You can mix these up and it will cause problems.

But as far as it being necessary to change the oil pump, NO. If you had a 3V, I would replace it no matter what. But 2V's don't have the inherent oil pressure issues of the 3V.

Water pumps are easy as hell, so it's your call there. If you're not having heating issues, leave it.

Is there something about a power steering bracket bolt hard to get to, or something?

Yes. It is a PITA, but doable. My Buddy's was hodge podged together with a bolt with a bunch of washers on it, and that may be why it sucked so bad. If my memory serves me correctly, it is supposed to have studs from the factory. You have to remove the pulley too, BTW. I don't remember if that video goes through all of that. If it does not, Makuloco has a 3V video that shows it that process, and it is an identical process.

Well, I'll be damned. He didn't remove the pulley in the video.... but it makes it MUCH easier. This is what you are looking at for the process.

EDIT: Quite honestly, I have contemplated several times at leaving that particular bolt out (in the video) for reassembly. I really don't think there would be any adverse effects because it has 3 other bolts holding it. But, I have not ever actually left it out..... just thought about it.

Here is the pulley removal and install procedure. I have always done this in the truck though, rather than in a vice.

I'm getting ready to order. Are these cast iron tensioners and gears. Or plastic?

When I did my head gaskets I did not put that power steering bolt back in, 3 is more than enough. I read somewhere that it was eliminated in later models.

Man! You've been spoon fed a boatload of information so far.

How about, oh, I don't know, doing a little homework on your own and asking them??? https://www.cloyes.com/contact/
