Honestly curious. The V6 seems to underpower the truck, with little or no appreciable fuel economy advantage, and be less reliable to boot (based on a quick scan of problem threads in here).
What's the draw of the V6 (if there is any)? Easier to service? Cheaper parts?

I have found the v6 to be quite reliable. It is simpler mechanically than the modular motors (no COPs). I think it uses an iron block and heads. Not sure that many people were originally choosing the v6. The v6 was the base engine, so lower trim levels and cheaper trucks had them. My truck is a work grade (crank windows, manual locks, fixed side and rear windows).

Yep. What he said ^^^.
Despite what many people say, they do have a purpose.

V6's are useless and I never understood why they went into trucks. The inline 6's had lots of torque and arguably a better powerband for hauling but the v6? Useless. It's worse then the 4.6 in every way and if you want to swap your 6 for an 8 it's a big job.

You're certainly not an economics major.

I love my 4.2 V6. I have put that truck threw hell and it just keeps on going. Its got 212K on it now and I have never had to anything major to it. I own a portable sawmill and have pulled some big loads of logs behind it. I actually feel like I have abused it, but it doesn't seem to mind. lol

Not sure what you're talking about. I didn't know you needed an economic degree to understand that a 4.6 is a far better motor then a 4.2. Why bother with a v6 when the 8 makes more power for the same fuel mileage? Even if I were buying a cheap work truck, I'd still make sure it had the 4.6 it's a great motor and good on fuel.
I had a 4.3 V6 in a 05 Chev half ton (regular cab, long box 2 wheel drive work truck) and it was worse on fuel then the 4.8 v8 that replaced it in the same truck configuration and had half the power. I never understood why they even bother with a 6 in these trucks, I used to think it was fuel usage till I had one. They're too underpowered to haul a full size vehicle without having to work hard, negating any fuel savings they might have.
