Being totally honest, purchased boxes are really a bargain , and more so if you place any value on your time.

You can build heavier, thicker, better boxes, but they will cost just about as much as the ones you can buy, or more due to waste, and you will spend a lot of time doing it too.

Heres an example of what it takes for a 1 cu ft 3/4" thk box: ( incl tax)

Mdf $26
Glue $4
Spray Adhesive $17
Carpet $20
Terminal box $5
Wire?
Crimp terminal, Solder?

$72

Then quite a few hrs of time
Assuming you have jigsaw or router, and tablesaw, square
Brad gun or drywall screws, and clamps
Etc

A good box needs accurate cuts and tight joints that glue totally seals.

Theres good reasons to build your own box, but saving money isnt one imo. If you can buy one that you will be happy with...id say do it.

I was looking at adding an amp and sub to my truck for a while. All told, I wasn't impressed with what I could do with the boxes that fit under the back seat, a low profile sub, and amp for the cost. Not to mention you lose all that storage space.

The solution I just discovered that impressed the hell out of me was the Alpine PWE-S8. I have it on order and should have it soon. It's a small, all-in-one, 8" sub/amp combo that honestly sounds really good. No, it's not going to blow the windows out or impress any young-folk, but it sure will round out the low end of your stereo REALLY nicely without breaking the bank or taking up a ton of space.

I have an infinity reference 8 in a 0.35 cu ft box under my rear seat. It rounds out the sound perfect., leaves half the room free undr seat, a nd adds a bit of thump. not rattling windows or nothing like that,

It only takes about 250W, rms so Ive got a Lot more if I went with a 10" 2 ohm.
