Default Starter ??

I did a search and read several posts regarding starting issues. But, each didn't seem to fit, so I thought I'd go ahead and post.

Just yesterday, my truck cranked over 4 - 7 times, which is very unusual. It usually only takes 2 - 3 cranks and fires right up! Anyway, I brushed it off as a small glitch.

Well, 2 days later after I get gas, I try and start and it cranks 5 - 10 times, and does not start. So, I let it sit a second, and try again, and it goes 4 - 6 times and doesn't start. So, I stop, and let it sit a second and try again. This time 2 - 3 times and it fires up.

Do you think it is the starter? I have never replaced the starter, and the battery is about 4 - 5 years old, or longer.

I am not happy, because I just had a sleave inserted into the No. 7 spark plug hole. It seems, every time after I have my truck in the shop, something fails. Seriously! lol. (Ford Dealership)

Anyway, my truck is 2002 F-150 5.4L, 4x4.

Sounds more like a fuel issue. Takes a few cranks for it to get enough fuel for it to fire. If it was the starter they usually either turn over but grind or don't turn at all. Might want to get the fuel pump checked out.

If I were you I'd go to autozone and have them test your battery.

I think I'll run up to autozone and have the battery checked real quick just to rule that out.

If it is a fuel pump, is that in the gas tank?

Yep. If it's fuel it could also be the fuel filter if you haven't changed it in a while. Recommended every 30k.

The fuel pump is in the tank. I totally missed the battery part in the first post. Get that checked out.

Otto,

Actually, as you said, it does sound more like a fuel issue. As if it trying to get gas, or has that feel.

I am heading up to have the battery checked right now (autozone).

How long has your fuel filter been in there?

You could always buy a starter and put it on there and if that dosent put your old one back on there and return the old one. I've done that to advanced a few time lol
