Haha I agree, I only have the 4.2l and i changed all the plugs in that one. The only problem i had was the surrounds breaking off the spark plug but they all came out fairly easy, and that was with 100k on them

Not a problem with the 4.6 in 98 in changing the plugs. Just make sure you put back in the Motorcraft plugs. You won't have any problems with this year as far as R&R the plugs. If you had the 5.4, you might want to take it somewhere, but with your 4.6, go for it. There are no COP's on this engine, just a wire to each plug.

^^correctamando .... Easy as pie...backs ones are a little tricky to get too... be sure to change wires also.... if you get the plug loose and dont have a socket the plug will stay in.. just take the spark plug wire and put back on the spark plug and then pull the plug out like that.. I always use a very very very tad bit of anti seize... Use motocraft plugs also

I have to 5.4 and the same problem as OP, im afraid to do them but at 97,xxx on the truck im sure they need to be done since i dont know when previous owner did them. but i dont want to take it somewhere, them break one off and lie to me and say its done right. the cost is also a big issue,

what is expensive as s***? how much should i expect to pay to get plugs done in my 5.4?

Like you guys i was scared too but seriously its not that bad. Me and a buddy in like 2 or 3 hours and that was with nothing to stand on and constantly jumping off the truck to get tools. We only lost a 3/8 ratchet out of the whole deal haha not a bad deal. Hopin to find the ratchet soon. We lost the ratchet half way threw and had a half inch ratchet with many extensions and many size changers to get down to a quarter in socket for some stuff lol. Really its not that bad, we barely had the proper tools and made it work.
