Pioneer Avh-P4300DVD, 7" touch screen all controls are on the bottom strip. customizable colors for screen an buttons, you can also upload custom backgrounds such as personal pics or a pic of your truck from an SD card. front slides down to show an SD slot, DVD slot an aux hole. everything else is played from the back via aux/USB cord, available hd an satellite radio, Bluetooth hook up, backup camera available also this radio has lots of extras to add, also there is a relay you can buy off of eBay to play videos while driving an not having to put your parking brake on. it can play pandora off your phone, can also play videos off your phone including from YouTube. like I said tons of stuff, I got it on sale for $370, usually pricing is $500 and it comes with all free installation gear you need. radio adapter just incase, dash kit an wiring harness and free shipping within the US. comes with remote control as well. I absolutely love mine

Not true, on all years anyway my 01 fit my kenwood perfect with storage on the bottom

As far as decks I had a JVC for my system and it worked awesome with a USB hook up and AUX input and it had extra speaker output and subwoofer output, but I have since replaced that with a Kenwood that has dual speaker outputs and a subwoofer output, plus USB and AUX inputs, on top of that it has bluetooth for my phone, both units had HD radio and variable colors to better fit custom interors, I love both of them, but the JVX only cost $200 compared to the $300 of the Kenwood.

But anyways here a picture of my Kenwood

If you want the "stereo" to fill the entire compartment you need a double DIN headunit. You don't necessarily have to have a touch scree or navigation to get a double DIN. I know pioneer and JVC offer double DIN HU that are neither touchscreen nor nav. They are relatively cheap two, you can prolly pick one up new for under 250 with two usb inputs and possibly a front aux plug. I have an Alpine CDE 123( front and rear usb) and front aux I need to get rid of if interested.

As for the tapering off, my 03 FX4 will allow me to mount bottom or top. I would assume it doesn't tapper off on any of the 97-03's with the factory double DIN HU. If it did, the OEM stereo wouldnt fit.

Pioneer actually makes a really respectable HU. The new DEH80 is prolly one of the best headunits out. It offers time alignment, lpf, hpf, and alot more high end options than competitors.

I prefer the older model alpines, myself. They have selectable LPF and HPF, bass control, media expander, bandwidth and frequency selection all from a single DIN HU. If looking for a good sounding, high quality HU I suggest looking at the following;

Pioneer DEH80
Alpine 9886, Alpine CDA 7893, Alpine CDA 7894

I have the CDA 7894 (offers green illumination to math the OEM appearance as well)
