The lean codes are what made me want to dive into this job.

A pessimist would say, "waste of time" but I am not saying this. I did a plug change and put fresh intake gaskets in, and the truck shows major improvement.

It's just ironic that the codes reappear lol.

If it applied maybe lol. Well now you can work on the little things, like the lean codes in your spare time. The only thing you worked on that MIGHT contribute lean codes in the upper/lower intake gaskets. Key word there is "contribute", meaning they won't solely be responsible UNLESS the upper wasn't staged correctly after a fresh fubared install creating a gross intake/un metered leaks. Rarely does it just happen. It's an easy check, just stick a propane bottle down by the intake while it's running. That will freak out combustion lol.

Lean codes involve the MANY intake ports leading to the engine...they're many!

By lean code(s), I am guessing you're getting lean on both banks?

Are those the ONLY codes?

Yes, P0171 and 174. Only codes left. When I bought the truck there were 9 codes. This recent job was to solve the lean codes on both banks as well as change the plugs.

I'm assuming that you inspected the PCV system (hose and elbow) really well?

Pretty much got to be pulling in unmetered air somewhere.

These codes were active when I bought the truck in Feb.

Upper and lower intake gaskets? That scares me, lol. I only did one set of gaskets, after I cleaned the intake ports on the heads I pressed them into their alignment holes and staged the bolts properly.
I also changed the crossover gaskets and the TB gasket up top.

What are the "lower" gaskets you speak of?

Yes, my other thread tackled these issues - I replaced all of the rubber on the vacuum tree that feeds the fuel reg, egr, egrvr. I replaced all the hoses leading off the TB. I recon'd the PCV tube from the rear of TB to the right valve cover, it looked fine inside and out. I replaced the elbow on the left vc. I bought a brand new DPFE and MAF. I tested the EGR by initiating a near-stall condition by sucking on a vac line to the top nipple of the valve.

There were huge leaks evident in the old gaskets. Perhaps now that they're tight this is causing more pressure in the PCV line on the right which I only visually inspected.

That would be your lower intake. I should have a pic of it somewhere...yea here, -

Oh, I don't have that style. My intake is one piece black plastic with the hollowbox underneath. Doesn't come apart.

What if this truck had an engine swap? Since when does the 97-03 5.4 have a two-piece intake? Feels like a Mandela Effect, lol.
