I'm in the middle of a transmission swap.
Since I have to replace the cooling lines anyway, I'm considering adding a remote filter along the way.

I think mine has driver side inlet, have to double check.
I don't have the desire to add tranny temp gauge, unless I can be totally convinced otherwise.
I do some hauling, but very little towing.
Not sure whet your goal is here.... easier oil change? Less messy?
I put a plug on mine. I did not do it in lieu of dropping the pan and changing the filter, however. I did it to make less of a mess when I change the fluid. Without fail, I always make a mess getting the pan out.... clearing the cross member.
As far as a remote mount filter, the idea sounds neat.... but you've got a filter that is pretty easy to get to. Not only that, but regardless of what you put in it externally, that internal filter will still be filtering and need replaced. If your idea is to aid your "some hauling, but very little towing", spend your money on a bigger cooler. Much more benefit will be had here over a remote filter.
As mentioned above, the primary/original filter is still doing all the work. The add-on filter really doesn't bring anything to the table. If you want a drain plug, have one welded in or buy a replacement pan so equipped. The plug kits have an annoying habit of leaking.
I sealed the plug that I added with some Permatex Ultra Black on the inside (had to let it sit for about 8 hours, as I remember), and it's been great. I used the Dorman plug for it.
