Default Rear View Mirror with Camera

Without spending a fortune on another new head unit, I'm looking into replacing the stock rear view mirror with one that has a LCD display that uses a rear view camera. eBay has many kits, even some that are wireless.

Has anyone installed one of these? I had a GM rental a few years ago that had one and it wasn't bad at all! I can envision tapping into the reverse light to power the camera and remote transmitter, and the mirror with receiver can get 12v from plenty of places in the cab.

The price tag of about $150 for the whole kit including the camera makes this seem attractive. I would take this on after sanding and paint, since I might consider getting the logo camera setup off a 2012 or newer.

I installed one of them in my buddies truck. I personally would rather have my entire mirror but he really likes it.

From the pix, it looked like you keep your mirror until the LCD screen kicks in. Since I have an overhead shelf, plan b could be a separate dedicated LCD screen, but with an external GPS and other electronics, that might be too much distraction.

You can still see the shadow of the screen in the mirror.

Find a superduty tailgate. Use a Emblem camera setup. Then you are able to use a factory style rear view mirror if you wish. I have setup many of them. Steer clear of the cheap chinese camera's they cloud up with moisture very quickly. I have a O.E Ford emblem style camera and am using my Live wire for back up duties and absolutely love it. The clarity of the OE camera is astonishing.

So, obviously, if it's too good to be true, then it is. I'd love the emblem camera setup with that LARGE Ford emblem centered in the tailgate. I'd hate to think that I'd have to buy a newer truck with > than XLT just to get a bells and whistles head unit with camera. We upgrade these Gen 10s with modern technology, so why not with safety features?

Anything is possible. I love my back up camera. Even at night it still very usable. It makes hooking up to a trailer a simple task.
