Default A question about the 4x4 system.

You guys have to be, wth this guy again? lol im full of questions but anyway. Reason why im asking is because i dont have a owners manual. Today i was fooling around with it. and i have the typical floor 4x4 selecter shifter on the 1999 models or so on. Anyways, i put the truck in neutral to be on the safe side, and between 2h and 4h i mean flawlessly. also going into neutrel ofcourse the dead spot nothing should go wrong. But trying to get into 4L, their was a small grind and i didnt try anything after that. i put it back into 2h and went back on with my day. is it normal? or am i doing anything wrong. Its been a long time for me since i've had 4 wheel drive.

I actually haven't tried 4-low in my 02 yet, but with my '78 there was a grind when put into 4-low, but at no other time. It was pretty easy to put into 4-high as well.

if you in neutral and on the brakes it should be fine... check your fluids maybe?

If you don't have a owners manual, go to this site:

i tried the 4L again yesterday and it just would not go in while the truck was in neutral and brakes applied. when you try to enter, you just hear a grind, and it cant go in. i would love some help. if anyone thinks they know whats the problem. i even tried to put it in while the engine was off and it was a no go. and i missing the slot lol?

Are you giving it a good solid yank? I know with my '78 you had to pull it in swiftly with some force, it would clunk but it would go in.

Again I haven't tried 4L with my '02 yet, but I imagine they are similar.

That's what I would think...

I know the time I got stuck in the sand I couldn't get it into 4low, and I think I put it in park and got it. But I can't remember. I know I've put it in 4low when in neutral..... As long as your on the brake and the engine is idling and not revving it should go in gear.

I'd say just keep wiggling it back and forth and see.
