Default Problems with a 98 f150

Hello there. I may be receiving my sisters 98 f150 4x4. I do not know the fine details of it but this is what is wrong:

1. Parking brake: No worries just gut it out put in all new.

2. It will not engage park

3. Have to start it in neutral.

Any answers?

Wont start in park? Park position switch is bad. Its located on the driverside of the transmission and has the shift lever attached.

I was thinking the same, maybe the linkage is off. That would cause both that and
not engaging the park mechanism.

There is no adjustments for the switch itself. Does park work in the transmission?

To be on the safe side, make sure you look at which transmission it is and find one at a local junk yard just in case. You didn't say if this would be a daily driver or just an extra truck, so not sure what your plans are for it.

While you're under there, check all of the connections for wear. Not just electrical, but the mechanical too. Check the output shaft seal on the transfer case to make sure it's not leaking.

Have you been underneath to manually put it in park with the linkage disconnected? If not, give that a try. Your linkage might be out of tolerance. I've bent my linkage before while playing offroad and it did the same thing. Essentially when it was in park, it would actually be between park and reverse. Have somebody in the cab go from park to drive so you can see the motion before you disconnect the linkage to test.

If after you test it still does it, I'd say the parking pin has been snapped inside.

Manually put it in park. If it still rolls, you will need a new Trans as the parking pawl is broke.
