Problem with 4 wheel drive

Default Problem with 4 wheel drive

The front axles are not locking in on my 98. Went through the steps to check according to what I have read on the forum.

Transfer case is engaging, drive shaft is turning. Checked vacuum lines up front, found a hole, replaced lines, still did not work. The actuator was not moving. I replaced with new actuator and now it is moving in and out.

The axles are still not engaging. What do I need to do now??

Sounds like a broken shift fork... it's located inside the passenger side axle tube... It's the part that the actuator moves via the linkage arm... the shift fork throws a splined collar over the 2 piece passenger axle shaft thus locking the front differential to the ground

Can u just pull the tube off and that cv shaft out or do ya gotta drop the whole unit

I've seen the diagram and read a hundred post about it all over the web i got to replace my passenger side cv shaft and figured since it was out 4 bolts and I shouldn't have to slide it but 2 or 3 inches and I think I can do all of it in the truck just curious if anybody has I've been looking and don't see y I can't with the shaft removed

I have searched for hours on google. Lots of post about this but nobody seems to want to answer it.

Yes you can do it in the truck without removing the whole housing. You drop the cv shaft and then you can access the stub shaft and fork housing. Make sure you support the truck correctly so you don't have a problem putting it back together. Use a jack stand on the right side frame and use a jack to support and raise and lower the carrier. If its too low you'll have gear oil everywhere, but raised a notch, no leaking.
