Default premature abs

About 1 in 10 times that I apply the brakes of my 03 f150 4wd 4wabs, the brake pedal drops like the abs is working. This only happens towards the very end of stopping, below 10-15 mph. The dealer mentioned a tone ring or an abs sensor on the wheel. How do I know which is the problem and how is the tone ring replaced if it is the problem?

Thanks

Sorry, I can't help with your thread although mine is similar listed in the 97-2003 section. Maybe someone will have some insight that will help both of us.

An ABS scanner would be a big help in your instance. Mine does the same thing from time to time.

Is there any way of determining which wheel might be the problem w/o the scanner? Any thoughts on the cost of a sensor?

Thanks again

Ive been told that if you let go of the steering wheel at slow speeds when it happens, the steering wheel will turn towards the direction of the bad sensor.
The sensors arent all that expensive, they cost about $20 for the front ones and the one in the rear diff is about $40.

Get it scanned. You can spend hundreds of dollars throwing parts at it and never fix it.

What is involved in changing the abs sensor on the wheel? Where exactly is the tone ring and how is that changed?
Can an OBD II scanner diagnose abs sensors?

Thanks

The sensor is easy to change. It might be included in the hub bearing assy. Regular OBD2 scanners will not get into ABS. It is not Federally mandated that they do. Just the emission codes.
Thats why you have to take it to a shop.

Someone mentioned that if you let the steering wheel go at low speeds while the pedal flutters, it will turn toward the side of the bad sensor. This seems backwards to me because the side it turns to would be getting full braking power as opposed to the opposite side being less due to the abs. Does this sound right?
