Default Power steering pump

Just had a quick question or two about power steering

Ive been driving with out power steering for awhile since I haven't had the money... So tommorrow we are finally putting a new pump put in..

But the thing is, the pump that went out sqeaked all to hell then finally quit sqeaking and didnt worked at all.. Should be the pump right?

And is there a way to remove the old pulley from the bad pump so i dont have to spend any money on a new pulley?

And one more... Would i be able to steer the truck if the steering gear went out??

Got the new pump on and it works like a charm.

Now we have a major leak. I can't really see where its coming from.

Is it possible that the steering gear/box or whatever is cracked so it is leaking the fluid??

I had to put pretty much 1 quart of fluid in it for about a 30 minute ride stopped periodicaly checking making sure it wasn't humming and running the pump dry.

The leak is probably coming from the high pressure line where it screws into the pump. Often times a new pump or pressure hose will come with a rubber O-ring. It's suposed to have a teflon ring on that hose, and it wears out almost every time you unscrew it. That teflon O-ring is $2.50 at the dealer. Unfortunately, I don't know any other place to get it.

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. They come with a rubber O-ring for no apparent reason. The rubber O-ring doesn't work. You have to get the original teflon one for it not to leak. I've tried to seal it 6 ways to Sunday with that rubber O-ring and never had any luck. I finally asked a Ford tech, and he told me there is no way it will seal with a rubber one.

Oh man that sucks. I'm sorry to hear that. That's a good chunk of change since you don't have a returnable core. That can definately happen if you run that box without fluid though.
