Default possible tranny problem???

hey

if anyone has any input or has run into this problem any help would be greatly appreciated

i have a 98 f 150 4.6 4x4 with about 220k miles

the other day i was driving on the highway and i let off the gas and it felt like the truck downshifted but it felt a little hard. when i went to hit the gas the engine revved up but it wasnt in gear. i pulled to the side of the road and all my gears were gone. i didnt even have park.

so after towing it home and waiting to do something with it, my buddy and i decided to take a look at it. we played with it a little and put it in 4 wheel and it would drive. i decided to take it around the block and again i lost the gears but when i put it in 4 wheel it drove again. it continued to drive even after i put it back in 2 wheel but it has been parked since then. even when it was in 2 wheel it didnt seem right and it would shift really fast. the whole time i was driving it i never went over 25mph but it shifted into at least third gear.

my one buddy does a lot of transmission work and he is a bit stumped so any help would be appreciated

thanks

patrick

My first guess would be a problem with a sensor that the trans uses to decide when to shift. Check the fluid as suggested.

and if the fluid is a little low id put in some lucas additive for transmission that should help out some. also you could have it put on the computer for transmissions

my buddy is thinking it is the transfer case

and yup it does have fluid in it
i didnt smell anything burnt

it is the factory tranny and hasnt been touched at all until about 2 weeks ago

i guess i am fortunate that i have not had to spend a dime on it and it has around 222k miles on it
