Your 02 is comparable to 99 to 03 (04 H) models. The 97-98 will not work. Smaller studs, disc/vs/drums etc. You have the 9 3/4 axle and so do all the other F150 (not the 7700). Direct switch, unless you have different gears. If you have the same ratio, go for it. You should have NO problems as the ebrake cables are the same also.

My 02 has a 8.8 in the rear end. There were 3 different axle choices on these trucks, the 8.8 (common on 4.2's and 4.6's), the 9.75 (common on 4.6's and 5.4's) and the 10.25 (F250 LD and 7700). Simpler to do a lunch box locker swap. Dont have to reset the ring and pinion and you get full traction out of it in the end. I ended up going with the Lock Right in my 02 and it was one of the best investments I made on the truck. Really added some force. First you need to identify the axle. Ford didn't ditch the 8.8 until the 09 model I believe. They still use the 9.75 and 10.25 I think.

But if you can't a locker becomes cheaper.

I'm not sending this from my iPhone while driving.

Lunch box locker are way easier to install though. Only are removing the spider gears. The carries stays in the housing so there is no need to reset the ring and pinion and check all the backlashes like you should when ever you replace carriers.

It was quite easy. Literally spent more time cleaning the old gasket off than anything else.
