Nahh, you have to take the Y loose (exhaust) is all. Take it loose somewhere behind the Y at the intermediate pipe. Take the damper loose above the crossover (13mm). Then remove the Y form the manifold ball on both sides. The Y will then drop down giving you access to the upstream converters.

Dropping the cross member isn't a big deal. Folks usually will do so when changing the transmission mount, they tend to wear out at about 140,000 miles or so. Makes it easier to work on the Y but isn't necessary. If the truck has more 140,000 miles on it, you may want to do the kill two birds with but one stone thing. With the 4x4, you can support the trans/transfer with a 6" 2x4 block. Fit the block between the rear of the trans and T-bar support cross member. You'll have to lift the trans slightly to fit the block, then set back down slowly on the block in place. This way there's no jackstands getting in the way while working underneath. Loosen the mount nuts first before lifting and setting the block.
