Default Paint flaking off dash

I have a 2001 supercrew xlt and the paint is flaking off the dash panel. It is worse just under the radio. I have heard that this is a special paint. I cannot believe that it is painted I also thought these parts were color injected plastic. Is this a common problem?

hmmm depends if it was painted by someone else...you can use fusion paint to paint the dash board but if im not mistaken, you can buy kits from the dealerships that are the exact color to "dye" the dash again. i think thats how its done...if not, someone else will correct me good luck

I've cut holes in, burned holes in, and scratched my dash before and as far as I can tell there is no paint on it.

On my 02, top of dash is a large panel that has some paint chipping, am a horrible touch up man so have done nothing. I attributed mine to the hot desert sun 6+ years of it.

yea i think the only way there would be paint on it is if someone painted it...the dash is dyed i think...or maybe just colored plastic? not sure...but i did paint my dash and it was really easy and turned out great.

Theres paint on some of your dash parts. Maybe all. I know all the dash parts I painted, before I painted them, I sanded all the old grey off right down to the abs plastic.
Mine chipped above the radio, thats why I painted it in the first place.

I was gonna ask about this. One of the few interior flaws I have is a fingertip sized circle of missing gray at the edge of the radio trim to the right of the air vent.

I have searched the internet over and can not find a touchup pen or kit. I even looked to see if Office Depot had a medium or dark gray Sharpie marker...

I did find the small cans of the dash spray. I think I will get a can, spray a small amount in the cap, then immediately paint some over the black circle with a wee tiny artist brush. Might turn out perfect, but even if close will not stand out as much as the contrast of the black dot in a sea of gray.

Eastwood sells a paint for these applications -

the trick is to find the right stuff elswhere (eastwood is expensive)

you need VINYL paint - this is what the factory uses...

all abs parts in your interior have been painted. - they use a high VOC vinyl paint
\

smells like HELL

evap rate is SUPER fast - but it is durable

It is definitely some sort of sprayed on coating. Like dragbike says it is vinyl based or has vinyl in it. Mine certainly looks and feels like metal underneath. I will get a magnet and check it.
