Default OVERDRIVE on Startup

I have a weird question.

I have a 2001 with the 5.4 lariat trim. Upon startup, overdrive (OD) is on (normal). Is there a way to get overdrive to stay off when you start your truck?

I have no problems, i just like to drive with OD off in town, i use my brakes less, just my preference.

Now I may be wrong, but on the end of the gear selector there is a button, if you press it then the off light comes on. I believe that’s how

To make it permanent, you have to go into the program and have it turned off. Uhaul uses this on their vans from Ford, so it is possible.

Yea, permanently is what I'm looking for. I'm tired of pushing the button everytime I start the truck.

Superior makes a kit for this, but it only goes to 1999 in their literature.... but I do not know of any differences between a 99 and 2001 trans/wiring. You may want to call them and see.

Why do you want it off? Overdrive on doesn't mean it's in overdrive. If IIRC it doesn't begin working until around 45 MPH. Unless you're towing why wouldn't you want it? You can permanently disable it by cutting or disconnecting one of the button wires. Ford had a problem with this happening on its own and fixed a lot of them.

I get less coasting with it off (at any speed). So less breaking. That's my main reason.

What I really would like to have is my manual transmission, but alas they are on the chopping block.

Have you tried just pulling the fuse? 97-03 says fuse #29. EDIT, forget that since it also says instrument cluster.

You also get less fuel efficiency. Less braking doesn't make much sense. Since the torque converter isn't locked up anyway, the difference in engine-braking effect in OD vs 3rd in deceleration will be minimal, and OD is only in play above about 45 MPH so below that, there is no difference at all. Sounds like placebo effect to me. As stated above, the only reason to turn it off is when towing (and/or if the trans in hunting on hills like mine does here in the mountains, but that's mainly due to it having bigger tires and 3:55 gears).
