Default Over height, need clearance lights?

So the other night when I was driving home from work I got pulled over by a cop for not having correct marker lights on my truck. He said that I was over height because of the high top cap and needed to install cab lights and lights on the cap too. I've only ever heard of clearance lights needed for vehicles over 80" wide (officially my truck is 79.5") and I think the cop may have just wanted an excuse to pull me over at 3 in the morning to see if I had been drinking.

Anyone have any insight? The cop just let me off with a warning.

It seemed strange to me, I know my truck is classified as a "tall" vehicle on toll road since its over 7' 6" but I couldnt find anything on the DOT site about height limitations

I know your headlights can be over height but needing marker lights for your roof? I thought that was a convenience for the driver not a safety thing for others? I think the cops on glue IMO

Nothing required for height. If 80 inches or wider then must post amber lights on front cab.

Thats what I'm figuring.

Now I have to decide if I want to actually deal with the fact that I'm technically over width by about an inch, obviously no cop is going to pull out a tape measure, but it probably wouldnt be a bad idea.

shouldnt be to hard to put lights on the cap. I'd just throw some lights on there, including across the front of the cap close to rear rear of the cab. at night it will appear that you have all the necessary lights, but you wont have to worry about drilling holes in the cab of your truck.
