Default Oil Leak

I have a 2002 F150 4.2 and it's had a leak in my garage for a while. I checked it out and it's leaking from the transmission plug under the truck. Any sugestions on how to fix this leak? Thanks

Tranmission Plug? It may be leaking from your rear main and out the plug, or maybe it's time to service your transmission.

If it is leaking out the "Trans plug" you have a leaking rear main seal.

What color is the fluid? Red = trans. black/ Brown = oil. If red you need to pull the trans. possible front pump or torque converter leak. If its brown the rear main or the oil pan are leaking.

That is either the oil pan or rear main, you have to drop the transmission and unbolt the flex plate to fix the rear main. To fix the oil pan you could try tighting it first, but you have to pick the motor up to change the oil pan gasket.

I have had good success using stop leak additives like from Lucas. One product has a money back guarantee that worked wonders on my son's 2002 car. Change the oil, then add the stuff because you want it to remain for a while. These products have elastomer softening chemicals that soften hardened seals. Takes a few hundred miles to work. Worth the $10 to try first.
