Default Oil Changes???

Hey everyone! with the ecomomy so up I've decided to save a little money by doing my own oil changes. The only thing is I don't know what type of oil to get??? I have a 2000 F-150 XLT 5.4LT V8 with 123xxx miles. Should I get those High Milage oils or will regular 10w 40 do it??? And How many quarts? Someone told me that 5.4 V8 takes more than 5 quarts! Is that true and if so how much more then 5 quarts??? Please give me your feed back!!!

I would not use high milage, I used it on a 96 F150 with 250k and it washed all the crap out of the motor and it started leaking like crazy. I would use a 10W40 or 30. That is what I am running in my 02. I use mobil drive clean, but any 10 40 or 30 will work just fine. Make sure to get a good filter as well.

Do synthetic... My truck has 208,000mi and has had conventional all its life... when I switched to synthetic like two oil changes ago had no problems and got like 1mpg... And get 7 qts to be safe... Idk what stores you have but auto zone always have deals for like 5qts and a filter then just buy two more...

Walmart has the 5 gallon jugs for around 10-15 dollars depending on what brand. You will also need to buy another quart. I have ALWAYS ran a motorcraft filter on my fords. In 11 years I have never gotten a bad one nor had any issues with them. I tried the mobil one filter with synthetic with my cobra and it didnt do it any good. About one of the cleanest engines I have ever seen, was my 90 GT mustang. the lady owner always ran Havoline oil, I continued to run it and at 93k the motor still was as clean as the day it was new. The oil was never black. But oil is oil, just get a name brand.

You probably should be running 5W20.
The oil filler cap is labeled for the proper grade oil. Ford has updated the specs for required oil in most newer vehicles. My 97 originally spec'd 5W30, but itis on the TSB list as approved for 5W20. I switched to that because that is what is required for the wifeys Windstar, so now I only have to "stock" one grade of oil.

You should need 6 quarts for an oil change with filter. 5qts for the crankcase, and 1 to fill the filter.

I use motorcraft synthetic blend and motorcraft filters...no problems....
I can get everything at Wallyworld....

Since the vechile has 123,xxx + its okay to use 10-w40. When the vechile is new you will need to use the recommended type but if you ask any experience mechanic they will remind you that you need a thicker oil due to wear and tear. On my 5.4l i use almost 6.5 qts you will find out with 5.4l if you only put in 5 qts you will here a knocking sound when you turn it on.

I have 128k on mine and I am running 10w40, it says 5w30 for mine as well but seeing as its not a new truck anymore I want to make sure everything is properly coated.
