Default OIL change

my truck is a 97 4.6 f150 and it is due for an oil change.
my truck has 230,000 + miles and is still going strong and would like it to keep running strong. what oil and oil filter combination do u guys recommend? btw i live in hawaii no snow here (i heard weather affects the weight of the oil)

I've always used motorcraft filters, but I get them at work so that's a no brainer. And otto is right, even though originally you were supposed to use 5w-30, it has been updated to 5w-20.

motorcraft does make a very good filter.

for oil, I would stick with a 10w-30 non-synthetic for an old engine like that. I like to run thicker dino oil in older engines, because the synthetics are thinner, which can get by the piston rings as well as cause lower oil pressure. IMO 5w-20 oil is WAY too thin for older engines. The only reason Ford changed their "recommended oil" to 5w-20 was to "improve" the MPG ratings. I like mobile one "5000" because it's $10 for a 5 quart jug at walmart plus $3 for the motorcraft filter. You can't beat a $13 oil change. I know I'll get flammed for dino oil, but I don't think there is anything wrong with it. People have been using dino oil forever, I'm not too sure anyone can prove synthetic is "better"....

4.6s run like dog doo on 5w-30. The lifters tap horribly because the heads don't get enough oil. That is why Ford updated the older 4.6 and 5.4s to 5w20. I agree with using thicker oil on OHV motors like the 4.2, but not on the SOHC V8s.
