Default Oil Additive

'99 Lariat 5.4 triton, new to me and poorly maintained by previous owner. Looking to do an oil change to a nice synthetic, was wondering if anyone can recommend a pre-change additive to degunk it.

Also, what weight synthetic are you guys using up here in the northland?

Lucas does make the best hocus pocus magic in a bottle stuff. I put some of the Lucas stop leak in my front diff on my 86 f250 that had a small leak and it actually worked! I also squirted some in my oil and the pan no longer has little drops on it from who knows where

I wouldn't add any additives. Oil already has detergents made to clean your engine (why it gets dark).

I would guess the previous owner used the cheapest oil he could find, with no history I would stay away from synthetic oil. With a ton of miles and wear and tear in that engine I would use a conventional 10-40 or 20-50.

Do not use 10w-40 or 20w-50 as stated above. Cheap oil or expensive oil doesn't matter what they've used. Not changing the filter, running without oil or using the wrong weight is what causes harm.

Keep with what Ford recommends. It's on your oil cap. Use Motorcraft semi-synthetic.

There is no harm in switching to synthetic or conventional. You can switch back and fourth if you like...for say Winter and Summer. You can call a motor oil manufacture and ask if you don't believe me.

A lot of what I read on forums in regards to oil are myths that keep getting passed along because others haven't done their research or don't know any better. I'm not pretending to be a know-it-all. I've done my research.

What else would they say? They sell oil for a living. Why would you want a synthetic oil in such an old engine that hasn't been maintained? It costs more and in a high mileage motor you will see no benefits that justify wasting that money. I believe in synthetic oil and all the positives that go with it but I wouldn't use it in this case.
