I use plain ol' 10-30 Valvoline. 212,000 without any problems. Uses about half a qt between changes. I change it (or rather I get my son to) every 3k which, by today's standards, some say is an unnecessarily short span. Too set in my ways to go a different route now.

First off, I'm not leaving any oil in my engine for 25k. That 25k is with frequent oil analysis. Are you going to send your oil off to a lab every couple thousand to see if it's still good? For the extra price of their oil, filters, and lab testing I'll just change mine every 3k.

I've run Mobil 1 with a Motorcraft filter since I bought my truck in 99 with 30k on it. It has 190k right now, pulls excellent vacuum and runs perfectly with no oil leaks. I've changed the oil every 3k, although arguments are that I could probably push that to 5k. I see nothing good to pushing it to 5k other than I'm getting every available penny out of my oil. I'd rather get every available penny out of my engine.

It's never to late to switch to synthetic. It is a superior oil, of this there is no doubt. Sure, regular motor oil will suffice, but why not try and get the best longevity out of your internal engine components?

Why do I run Mobil 1 and Motorcraft filters? Cost and quality. Mobil 1 is consistently tops in synthetic oils. There's a reason why other oil manufacturers try and compare their synthetics to Mobil 1. Motorcraft filters are factory. Nothing wrong with factory. That, and they're a Pure1 filter element in a Motorcraft paint job. Best bang for the buck in filters, especially since the Motorcrafts can be had for about 2 bucks less than the Pure1.

Synthetic blend is better, but you still have the downside that up to 90% of some of these "blends" are conventional motor oil. In my opinion, you go one way or the other.

Lucas, Slick 50, and any other additives are not necessarily needed. It wasn't until 40k ago I started using Lucas. My well tuned engine immediately seemed smoother and quieter, just as the bottle claims. A slight vibration under my dash at 1500rpm's under light acceleration even went away. I've used other Lucas products with excellent results on my vehicle and others. I do believe in them. As far as I'm concerned, if a Lucas product doesn't fix it, then it needs a hard repair. I've also noticed great results from their fuel injector cleaner. Worked great too when I got a tank of bad gas and my truck ran poorly as I left the station.

Hope some of this helps.

Here is a dumb question, what year truck are you asking the oil question about? It does make a difference.
If a newer truck that calls for 5w20 or 5w 30, it is a good idea to run as it request because of the tolerances built in the newer engins. Running a 20/50 in one that calls for 5w20 or so, adds uneeded wear on your oil pump trying to push that oil thru, even running 10w40 in one calling for 5w20 can cause much unneeded wear on parts in your engine.
Synthetic oils are recommended in the newer engines as well due to the higher RPMs engines run to prevent breakdown of the oil.
You can get more teck info on sites dealing with these than I am offering, it is just I do try to keep on these things & have read the importance on using right weight oils.

Slick 50 or Dura-lube I run in every engine I own from my weed eater on up, lol. Just in the event I ever loose my oil for what ever reason.
This happened once running from Northern Ohio down to SC & I am so lucky I had slick 50 in my engine because I ran slap outta oil & went at least 2 tanks of gas before I realized it or somewheres in them 2 tanks I ran out of oil. Filled er up with oil & put about 150,000 miles on her before selling it.

One additional additive I use is Sea Foam & or Lucas in my oil & in my gas.
Refining has changed so much over the years, we have some dirty azz gas now to run in our engines. Having the bike I have with 2 Del-Orto carb set up & 4 valve promo heads on er, I know about dirty gas, even when only using BP's white gas & or racing fuel.
In my trucks, I run um like a truck & use um like a truck & working over a 100 miles outta town each way, keeping them up to par is important to me. When i travel to & from work doing so in an hr to an hour plus sure I need to be sure my trucks are in as good of shape as can be. Yup my insurance company loves me, no accidents, just the additional I pay them each month because I can never get down to less than 3 tickets.
