Question Oh no, another shock thread...

Sorry, but I had to bring one up!

So my '02 SuperCrew FX4 rides smooth as a baby's bottom for the most part. It rides like a '72 Lincoln Continental, and I mean that in a bad way. Drives straight but dips or humps on the interstate cause it to just surge up and down like you are on an ocean liner.... body rolls over too much in semi-agressive cornering. All four shocks have got to be so far gone I'm running on springs only.

I've run a few searches on shocks, it appears that almost no one replaces the stock Rancho's with new Racho's. I was always led to believe that they were good stuff. That's ok, I have my eye on Monroe Gas-Magnums for half the cost of Rancho's at Rock Auto.

So the replacement Rancho's aren't as good as advertised?

They might be good but not worth the cost for a normal daily driver.

Even a $15 shock will be better than a worn out one.

I prefer Bilsteins. My 03 has Bilsteins and they perform like the day they were installed. They have close to 130k now.

I have some gas magnums on the front of mine and like them. I have Gabriel Ultra's on the rear and noticed no difference from the Original OEM ones with 170,000 miles on them (but did not have any real issue with the OEM either, just got the Gabriels for $10).

A lot of people here seem to like the KYB shocks as well as Bilsteins, but I have never used either. I am too cheap. I got 4 shocks for $60 and rides fine for me.

I shelled the extra pennies for Fox 2.0 direct replacements, paid around 450 for all four I think. I really like them, they are a little on the stiff side but that's how I like a truck to ride. The ones I replaced were worn so I can't compare to other brands, just throwing in my 2 cents.

KYB shocks are usually on the stiffer side. I had the Monomax on my old Explorer and they were pretty rough. I have some type of low range KYBs on my f150 and they are slightly stiff but still acceptable.

I have rancho 5000 and I don't mind them at all. I installed them 30,000 miles ago and they still ride like they did when I put them in. I did get the ones that are meant for 1"-2" lift in the front since I have the torsion bars turned up and that seemed to make a huge difference. I also have the ones that are meant for my 4 block in the back. I think that as long as you get the proper size it isn't a problem, or at least that is what I've experienced. As far as body roll you can't expect your truck to corner like a car especially if you have it lifted at all, the higher the center of gravity the more body roll you will have.

No lift, all stock. It rolls a lot more than my work truck (2011 F150 XL 2wd).

Regardless, it is time for s shock change when the wether breaks.
