Common problem. I need to do this, myself.

Unfortunately i have had that very problem with my 97 F150 and from what i was told at the dealer , it's a common problem . Be very careful about hitting your dash to make it work because whats happening is the spiral gear on the motor that turns the odometer is getting very brittle and eventually have complete failure. you can do what i did and get another instrament cluster from the local junkyard and install it yourself for around $50.00 or have it done at the dealer (if you have a lot of $$$). I went the extra step myself and reinstalled the original meter (?) in the new cluster just so so i could keep the original miles. One more thing, DON'T run your truck without the instrument cluster or you will end up with a dead battery because for some reason the alternator will not operate without being hooked up to the cluster. Good luck and keep me posted.

The OP has a '99. The cluster is different, from the '97/'98. It doesn't use the little wheels, it is digital.

This does work. I had printed this same information out in the past and had gave it to my used car dealer that i had bought my truck from and they had fixed it with this information. My Odometer does not go out anymore! So if any of you guys are considering doing this to correct it, it is worth it. Dealer wanted something like $ 500.00 - 600.00 to replace cluster! I was fortunate because where I had bought the truck, I know the owner and they did it for free for me!
