Default New tire problem

Put BF Goodrich Long Trail tires on my '99 F-150. Steering wheel shakes back and forth at and above 65mph. Dealer has balanced them four separate times, each time the balance is different and so is the shake..

Installed lower ball joints one year ago, new complete upper control arm just a few weeks ago. Still, more shake. Wheel bearings are nearly new.

Dealer checked entire drive train, etc. for wear and out of round. Said it was good.

What is the problem? Is it the tires or some chassis fix I'm missing.

122k around town miles, not abused.

I stopped using BFG years ago because of getting a couple of bum sets. Try Cooper next time. I promise you won't regret it. I've run three sets of Cooper S/T's and I'm about to put a fourth set on the Durango I just bought. They're expensive, but worth it.

That wouldn't cause the shake. I'd say it's just a bad tire or balance job. Rotate the rears to the front and see if it's better. If it is, tell the shop to replace them.

Dumb question, but did anyone check to see if there is water in the tire? I know there shouldn't be, but if the shop had them sitting outside and some water was in it, it will make it impossible to balance.

I've never had a truck out of alignment that caused the steering wheel to shake so it would have to be pretty bad. Since he just put on new tires, I think he could tell from the old ones if it was that far out. But I have been wrong before.....

When's the last time you have checked out the shocks? It's a stretch. But you never know. If your steering wheel is shaking at 65+ it's a balance issue and if they have to keep balancing them, it may be a tire issue and it would make them change the tires again. I have worked at several different shops and they will do it of you make a stink about it.

Like everyone else said, it's in the tires.

I had a set of BFG's generic tires called Regul A/T's, they never did get them to where the didn't bounce and shake at 30-35 MPH. I'll never buy that brand again. That was on top of the other sets of BFG's I've had issues like that with.
