Default Need to pick someones brain

I'm looking at buying a 2001 f150 4.6l, but its got a ticking sound from the front of the engine. When I take the oil fill cap off it sounds like its coming from the valve cover. Its got good oil pressure and no loss of power. Its showing a p0401 code. It runs like a champ, but that tick makes me nervous.

Nervous about buying a 21-year-old truck..... Well that just means you got at least half a brain. Ticks can be anything from valve lash adjusters to exhaust leaks, to worn connecting rods or wrist pins, noisy injectors, or even loose spark plugs. If you don't have the capabilities to check it out to your satisfaction then pay somebody that do. It's money well spent.

I was hoping that with the information I gave I could get it narrowed down to a good starting place besides "everything"

Unfortunately, from that description it could be many things, as mbb says, and checkunless you're good at diagnosing engines, a check-out by a qualified mechanic is the best way to proceed.

The code is not a huge deal, it doesn't really have much to do with engine condition. Mileage and maintenance records will tell a lot. Age can lead to things like rusty fuel tanks, mouse nests, hornet nests, etc. but the engine itself won't be affected much by age.

I always take a vehicle I wish to purchase in for a pre-purchase inspection by a known mechanic. Money well spent.

How did you determine “good” oil pressure?

That cute unscaled gauge pointing about halfway means you have as little as 7 PSI, since it’s a dummy gauge, which all of a sudden doesn’t sound so good, does it?

As for the cause of the noise, who knows. We aren’t there.

4.6s aren’t uncommon, so if you like the truck, otherwise, it might be worth it for the right price.

An automotive stethoscope may get you a little closer yuh. Many third party shops carry them.

Pinpoint where the ticking is loudest.

Also stethoscope the area you posted, then move it toward the front cover. Guessing it's the timing chain guides.

Good Luck!
