Default Need help with PCV hoses

Hey guys,

I recently changed my lower and upper intake manifold gaskets because they were leaking. I got everything back together and it is running well, but I'm not entirely sure I have the PCV hoses in the right places. If anyone can help me figure this out I sure would appreciate it. Sorry in advance for the bad drawing.

The two that go around the PCV in the "U" shape are for coolant. If you have it hooked to vacuum (if I am reading your diagram correctly), then no, it's not right. You have a heated PCV valve, and that's the purpose of the coolant hoses.

Ok, so if I swap the coolant hoses to the U shaped tube on the PCV. Where would that shorter hose going to the back of the intake manifold go? Surely it doesn't just make a loop?

I honestly couldn't tell you how it's routed. That was a regional part - mainly sold on the trucks back east as I recall. Seems like the story was, PCV's were freezing up in some areas.

I only know what it is because you aren't the first person to ask questions about it. This thread may be useful for you....

What year are you working on? Ford rearranged things over the years.

Your three way connection at the back looks odd, with PCV gases and coolant connected to the same thing. Might be a thermostatically or electrically controlled valve. The coolant path looks about right, leaving the main coolant passage, passing through the PCV valve and back to the main coolant passage. But the extra PCV gases hose seems off. I thought it was a straight shot from the valve cover to the intake manifold, at least that's my memory from working on mine.

The big question here is, what are you drawing where the red circle is? If all of those hoses are connected to the same manifold, that is no bueno. Green should be for coolant, blue for vacuum. Neither system should connect together anywhere.

It's a 2000. I thought the coolant hoses would make a loop around the PCV, heating the valve, but the I found this photo on the forum for a 4.2. apparently this photo came from the service manual.

That is a connection at the back left corner of the upper intake manifold. Looking at the hose lengths and shapes, it appears I have it hooked up correctly and if this photo I found on the forum is correct, it should be right. Maybe the coolant hoses are heating both the PCV and the back of the intake manifold? I can't tell if the fitting at the back of the manifold is also making a loop.

It does look like pre-2001 is odd. Found an eBay listing for a 98-99 PCV hose, but it says it only fits 2000. Your guess seems to be on target, as far as heating parts of the hose. Looks like Ford had two exits from the crankcase on the early years, then simplified it down to just the valve cover in later years.

Compare these two PCV hoses. My 2003 is a straight shot to the intake manifold port. Yours has that additional hose.

If the engine runs great and you don't have any coolant leaks and the hoses aren't bent weirdly to make them fit, it's probably right.
