Default Motorcraft tstats

When i put motor in 1.5 yrs ago, it came with motorcraft tstat. A few weeks later it was cold and motor ect wouldnt get over 168 F. Apparently tstat stuck open. I could see on my gauge as well as obd.

Went to dealer, got another. Worked perfect. Ran 190-195, might hit 200 at stoplight in summer. Forgot about
It. Fast forward 16 months or so, i play with torque and notice engine coolant isnt topping over 175-185F, and its not even cold. Apparently, another stuck one. Gauge is down just a tad. Probably been this way for while.

Motorcraft tstats are apparently junk these days....at least stick open though......

Off to napa

DO NOT buy an aluminum thermostat, no matter what brand. They don't like cold weather worth a damn. Buy a stainless steel 195* thermostat and never have to worry about that problem again. Stant or Motorcraft stainless steel are the very best. Stay away from that aluminum crap. We learned this valuable lesson in the 80's up here in Alaska. Now days, no reputable shop will put in aluminum anymore up here. Too many comebacks.

Yes, NAPA's is a Stant s/s t/stat. I'm willing to bet that both of those MC t/stats you took out were of the aluminum variety. Am I wrong? lol

No, they stainless
I suspect that after vehicle is out of production a while, parts become more cheaply sourced

Wow. I've never seen a SS one go south like that. The aluminum ones would get hot or cold and warp just enough to hold them open or closed. They were a pain.

Looking at my Ford parts manual (acceptable warranty), it shows that Stant was the manufacturer of MC thermostats at least thru 2008 and an acceptable replacement for the Ford #'d part. Makes you wonder doesn't it. Maybe try a Gates SS one? Good luck.

Very VERY true. No cheapies here. The wrong stat can make many bad things happen. 195 is the number and that goes way back w/Ford...generations even.

I've had several stainless steel thermostats go bad but they were all much higher mileage. In fact oem from both Toyota and Isuzu went bad on me

I wouldn't think that this one was bad except I know the temperature it ran when it was new and the temperature is it running right now are not the same. Gage really doesn't show the 10 or 15 degree difference

The best I ever used was Robert Shaw, but they are no longer in business. That is alarming news that the MC stats are going bad on you. I just bought one for my Escape.... but really the only other brand is Dorman on that (it comes with the housing, etc.)

1 mile from house this morning, new stant:

Mc wasnt stuck open when I temoved it, but wasnt modulating properly

Stant on left, mc on right. MC has rubber seat without metal support . Notice MC temp stamp is 192F ( on right, hard to see). Stant weighs 3.04 oz, MC weighs 2.94oz.
